The Importance of Attic Ventilation

I often go out to homes where the roof shingles are in bad condition, granulating, losing their adhesion, creased, etc. sometimes these roof are only 10-15 years old. Upon inspection I often find the roof had little or no ventilation. This caused the shingles to bake and age quicker.

It is estimated that 9 out of 10 homes in North America do not have proper attic ventilation. In summer this can cause attic heat in excess of 160 degrees. This super heated air eventually penetrates the ceiling insulation into the living area below.

It also causes the shingles to basically fry, and age prematurely. You can also see warping, cracking, and breaking down of wood framing and decking.

Proper attic ventilation allows for a continual air flow from the soffit at the base of the roof through the attic and out the top of the roof.

The FHA ( Federal Housing Authority), recommends atleast 1 square foot of attic ventilation per every 300 square foot of attic space. Ex. If your attic is 900 sq. ft. you need atleast 3 sq. ft. of attic ventilation.
